Delphine Tuot, MD
Dr. Tuot is Professor of Medicine at UCSF in the Division of Nephrology, Associate Chief Medical Officer of Specialty Care and Diagnostics at ZSFG, and Director of the UCSF Center for Innovation in Access and Quality at ZSFG. Her areas of expertise include provider-patient communication, patient self-management and primary care management of chronic kidney disease (CKD), health services research, pragmatic clinical trials and implementation science. Her research portfolio focuses on the development, implementation, and evaluation of interventions that increase patient awareness and self-management of kidney health, as well as health system interventions that enhance patient access to timely, high-quality specialty care, particularly within safety-net settings. She is the PI of a California Healthcare Foundation funded project that aims to optimize telehealth workflows to provide robust team-based, patient-centered ambulatory care. Pertinent to this proposal, Dr. Tuot conducted a NIDDK-funded clinical trial that examined the individual and synergistic impact of a clinic-level intervention (implementation of a primary care CKD registry) and a theory-informed, evidence-based patient-level intervention (language concordant CKD self-management program) on blood pressure control and participation in CKD risk reduction behaviors among patients with CKD. This trial was integrated in two safety-net health care systems in the SF Bay area, was one of the first in the U.S. to demonstrate improvements in team-based CKD care delivery and included telephone health coaching as one of its intervention components. Dr. Tuot’s experience with pragmatic trials utilizing technology and health coaching makes her well suited to lead this proposal, as these components are relevant to the Aims of this study. Dr. Tuot has a track record of successful collaboration with the study team, including several peer-reviewed publications with Dr. Sarkar (PMC4684927; PMC3185478; PMC6952011; doi:10.1353/hpu.2021.0060), Dr. Lyles (PMCID: PMC6952011), Dr. McCulloch (PMCID: PMC8477264, PMCID: PMC8350814, PMCID: PMC7729246, PMCID: PMC7725867, PMCID: PMC7380406, PMCID: PMC7387135, PMCID: PMC6057801, PMCID: PMC5838789), and Willard-Grace (PMCID: PMC6051985). Dr. Tuot’s rich expertise in patient education and self-management, implementation science, and the conduct of pragmatic clinical trials well positions her to lead the project.
